AARP Virginia is looking for a paid intern for the entire 2022 calendar year, January through December. The intern can be a junior, senior or graduate student, provided that they do not complete their program before December 2022 and are available throughout the year.

I. Job responsibilities

The AARP Virginia State Office is seeking a strong undergraduate or graduate intern to join its communications team for the 2022 calendar year. The intern will be led by the Communications Manager at state and will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter education, outreach programs and other local initiatives. In this role, the intern will help staff communicate with AARP members, the media and the public, focusing on video and digital channels. The intern will develop content for the State Office webpage, Facebook, Twitter, member emails and newsletters, edit volunteer-written stories, create and edit videos, prepare and distribute press releases, and will make calls to the media. The intern will also help train staff and volunteers on how to create smartphone videos and use Facebook and Twitter, as well as analyze and report on social media engagement and performance.

As a Communications Intern at AARP, you will have the opportunity to join our team of professionals working on major campaigns, engage our 38 million members (1 million in Virginia) and potential members. You will be assigned critical tasks and you will be able to see your work in action.

Applicants must be motivated, organized, collaborative, being able to learn quickly and to orient oneself well. Must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding editorial content under the supervision of the State communications manager. The primary nature of the interaction is coordination with the staff and volunteers of the AARP Virginia State Office. The intern plays a vital supporting role for AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects. The intern will work directly with the state communications manager to complete tasks related to the scorecard goals.

This is a great opportunity for the ideal intern to develop a solid experience working with the largest welfare organization in the country while contributing to projects that affect our members aged 50 and over.

II. Desired education, work experience and skills

You must be available at least 20 hours per week from Monday to Friday, January to December 2022. You must be able to work independently from home while AARP is telecommuting and be available to stay in the Richmond office for at least 4 hours when the office reopens. You must be able to be online (or at the office when it reopens) before 9 a.m. on Monday or Tuesday. As an AARP intern, you may be required to attend local events across Virginia when they resume and you will be reimbursed for travel expenses. The office is conveniently located in downtown Richmond.

The intern should be considered as a junior or senior undergraduate or progressing undergraduate or graduate student, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, journalism, political science or English. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Proficiency in social media (including Facebook and Twitter) is required. Great attention to detail is important. Ability to write clearly, with good grammar and punctuation, with AP Style, and know how to format a press release is required. Experience with a web hosting tool is helpful. Experience in researching, editing photos and videos, and writing press releases is essential. Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint. Interest in aging, communications / public relations and useful political issues.

III. Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; have good academic results; and be considered junior or senior undergraduate or rising undergraduate or graduate students. The AARP also considers non-traditional interns looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have already graduated from college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
