AUSTIN, Texas (KAMR / KCIT) – As the holiday season approaches, officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are raising awareness of the impact of drinking and driving on offenders and survivors, so as the number of alcohol-related accidents increases during the holiday season.
According to a press release, TxDOT will host various events statewide for its Drive Sober, No Regrets campaign through its website, SoberRides.org. The website features video testimonials from residents of Texas, encouraging residents to find sober driving.
“We hope these moving testimonials will encourage all of us to make the right choice and to never drive after drinking or doing anything that could interfere with our judgment,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said in the statement. . “We don’t want to turn a happy time of the year into one that could be marked by a tragic loss caused by someone’s poor decision to drive while intoxicated. “
According to the statement, more than 2,460 impaired alcohol-related accidents occurred between December 1, 2020 and January 1, 2021, killing 93 people and injuring 215. Authorities are encouraging individuals to designate a driver sober, call a cab, use a carpooling service, stay put, or use public transportation to make sure people aren’t driving impaired.
