What is a scanner machine?

A scan machine is a virtual or physical machine that runs scans. You can run scans on the same machine as the web server and enterprise server to start with. When you follow the installation wizard, the default option is selected.

You can also configure as many external machines as you want and use them as dedicated scanning machines. This way you can spread your scans across multiple scanning machines to avoid overloading a single machine. You can assign a maximum number of concurrent scans that can be run on each machine. Please refer to the technical requirements section for more information on the number of machines you may need to deploy.

Configuration with two external scanners

Note that if you decide to use external analysis machines, you must authorize them in Burp Suite Enterprise Edition before you can use them to run analyses.

Pool analysis

In standard deployments (as opposed to Kubernetes deployments), crawl machines exist in one of several crawl pools. These pools are used to manage resources for different types of scans or to scan different types of sites. To assign the machine to a different pool, see Managing scan pools.
